Lo Zanthoxylum Beecheyanum o comunemente chiamato Pepe Giapponese è una pianta da esterno proveniente dall’estremo Oriente ed appartenente alla famiglia delle Rutaceae. E’ una semi sempreverde, che con le temperature rigide tende a defogliare, dal portamento eretto con chioma compatta dotata di fitte e piccole foglie ellittiche di colore verde lucido che emanano un intensa fragranza di agrumi. In estate ed autunno produce numerose bacche di colore rosso in piena maturazione, molto utilizzate nella cucina orientale. Per la sua forma armoniosa e per le ridotte dimensioni è spesso utilizzato come bonsai, inoltre grazie alla sua resistenza alle bassissime temperature è apprezzata sia come pianta ornamentale per balcone e terrazzo che per la formazione di siepi basse o bordure; necessita di esposizione in luoghi soleggiati ma tollera anche il posizionamento in zone di penombra. Il terreno ideale deve essere fertile e ben drenato con irrigazioni costanti nei mesi più caldi che devono essere ridotte in inverno. Si consiglia di rimuovere, in primavera, i rami secchi o danneggiati.
