Strelitzia reginae or commonly called Bird of Paradise is a slow-growing evergreen with an erect habit, usually very long-lived but able to grow a few metres in height; it has long stems at the end of which spread its large lance-shaped dark green leaves with a lighter central vein. It blossoms in spring and summer when stems up to 2 metres long grow to support orange, goose-billed flowers reminiscent of the bird of paradise from which it derives its name. It is ideal as an ornamental plant especially for outdoors, to embellish the garden in groups or as a single specimen; it prefers to be placed in sunny locations but adapts well to areas of predominantly half-shade. The ideal soil should be fertile, rich in organic matter and well drained, we recommend citrusy soil.
