Il rododendro è un arbusto sempreverde che può raggiungere anche i 4 metri d’altezza. Il nome deriva dal greco rhodon= rosa e dendron= albero, ovvero albero delle rose. Fa parte della famiglia delle Ericaceae, le cui specie sono originarie di Cina, Giappone, Balcani e Nord America. Le specie selvatiche sono circa un migliaio e la gamma dei colori è vastissima. Giunse in Europa intorno alla prima metà dell’Ottocento e ne vennero subite prodotte diverse specie ibride. La classificazione botanica è particolarmente complessa e spesso sottoposta a revisioni e aggiustamenti. Il rododendro è assai simile alla azalea, dalla quale si differenzai essenzialmente per le dimensioni: il rododendro può raggiungere come detto anche i 4 metri d’altezza, mentre le azalee hanno delle dimensioni ridotte che le rendono facilmente coltivabili in vaso.

Il periodo di fioritura è principalmente il mese di maggio, rifiorisce a volte a settembre, durante il resto dei mesi è sempreverde.
