The caper is a small shrub or branched, prostrate-recumbent suffrutex of the Capparaceae family. Of the plant, the buds, known as capers, are eaten, and more rarely the fruits, known as cucunci or caper berries. Both are preserved in oil, vinegar or salt. It withstands temperatures close to freezing, but requires very well-drained soil; once established, it is very hardy. These plants, being from seed, are slightly easier to grow, although rooting still requires care.
