It is a variety of peach that is distinguished by its compact, yellow (sometimes white) flesh with a stone adhering to the pulp and the intensity of its aroma. A fruit that is excellent for health due to its good quantities of fibre, mineral salts and vitamins, it is widely used and cultivated in Calabria, Apulia, Basilicata, Campania and Emilia Romagna and can be eaten fresh or in syrup or used to make juices, jams, pulps and purees. The name percocca and the orange colour of the fruit has led to the false belief, especially in central-northern Italy, where the product is less common, that it is a hybrid between the peach and the apricot; but the percoca is actually a peach in its own right. Its size and appearance may vary depending on the season and time of year in which it is purchased.
La Percoca Di Turi matures in August.
The Percoca Di Turi ripens in August: the fruit is round and medium-sized with a yellow-orange skin covered with a thin down, while the flesh is yellow, firm with a sweet and intense flavour; to be eaten fresh or for the production of juices, fruit in syrup or sweets. It is a hardy plant that however fears spring frosts and prefers exposure in places exposed to direct sunlight and sheltered from the wind, with good adaptability in a half-shade position. It has no particular soil requirements as long as it is well drained, while watering must be carried out regularly, especially in the warmer months, always avoiding waterlogging.
