he Bougainvillea Californiana Don Mario is a perennial (if sheltered with TNT in winter) outdoor plant native to Brazil and belonging to the Nyctaginaceae family. It is a deciduous climbing plant that can reach great heights, even 10 metres in the wild; it has green stems that require supports to climb, while the leaves are alternate oval or elliptical and dark green. It flowers profusely in summer and autumn, producing small, bract-enveloped flowers in groups: the main characteristic of Bougainvillea lies in the bracts, which are modified leaves of mixed colours ranging from orange to fuchsia to yellow or pink. As a frost-hardy plant requiring a temperate climate, it is ideal for climbing on trellises, gates and pergolas and can be grown either in the ground or in containers on terraces and balconies. Exposure to particularly sunny locations is recommended to allow more continuous flowering, but partial shade is also tolerated. The ideal soil should be fresh, rich in organic matter and well drained, to be watered regularly in spring-summer and sporadically in autumn-winter, avoiding waterlogging.
