Buddleja Madagascariensis or Madagascar Butterfly Bush is a perennial outdoor plant from Madagascar and belongs to the Scrophulariaceae family. It is a shrub-like evergreen plant that can reach 4-5 metres in height; it has a short woody stem and arching branches, which take on a silvery hue when young, while the lanceolate leaves are dark green on the upper side and greyish on the lower side with serrated edges. Flowering occurs in the summer with the production of small, fragrant, funnel-shaped yellow or orange flowers in panicles up to 20 cm long. This Buddleja fears low temperatures and needs a mild climate. It is cultivated for ornamental purposes in the open ground in those areas where winters are not very harsh, but can also be planted in containers so that it can be sheltered during the coldest periods; it requires exposure in wide, sunny locations but also adapts to a position in areas where partial shade is prevalent. It has no particular soil requirements although a good quality universal soil with excellent drainage is recommended, while watering must be frequent in summer and reduced in winter, always avoiding water stagnation.
